STEPHEN L. POOLE

Born in Hawaii, grew up on Army bases in Alaska, Japan and Utah; high school in Florida (where I won the playwriting contest!); survived MIT; MS degree in Oceanography; sailed the seas as a NOAA officer; designed and tested tsunami warning buoys in Hawaii; worked in Japan for many years, eventually becoming the only non-Japanese manager at a Japanese company; worked in Russia, Europe and Asia; married a girl from India; traveled extensively and may be the only person on earth who has stayed in both Darjeeling and Kapingamarangi! Now I write plays for ART - the culmination of my career.

Steve is the brother of ART's Melinda Mains. In 2012, he wrote his first audio drama," Night Witches" about the females aviators that fought for Russia in World War II.

He got the idea for "The Saga of the Chipped Blade" while visiting the Edo-Tokyo Museum some years ago. The museum portrays Edo (Tokyo) during the days of the samurai, and Steve was impressed with how "modern" Edo seemed back in the 1700 - 1800's. Much like today, Edo Japan enjoyed a high degree of literacy and people had access to a wide variety of entertainment. Steve hopes to write other plays to give a glimpse of life in Japan during this period of cultural and artistic growth.

Steve can be heard in "The Saga of the Chipped Blade."
